Taxes

Taxes for 2022 are due April 18, 2023. All international students are required to complete Form 8843 if they were present in the U.S. during 2022. ISS has prepared instructions for the 8843.

International students who worked on or off campus during 2022 must file federal, state, and local taxes. Widener has arranged for access to Sprintax for international students who are nonresidents for tax purposes to complete their federal taxes for free and their state taxes for a small fee. Local forms are generally easy enough to be completed by the student. If you worked in the U.S. during 2022 and would like access to Sprintax, please refer to the instructions that were emailed to all international students in February. If you did not receive the email, contact iss@widener.edu and ask for the tax email to be sent to you.

Note that if you have been in the U.S. for more than 5 years, you are considered a resident for tax purposes and should use the same tax preparation software that U.S. citizens use. If you are not sure if you are a resident or nonresident for tax purposes, you can take the Substantial Presence Test to determine your tax residency.

You also have access to the Sprintax YouTube account where there are a number of educational videos on nonresident taxes. These will provide further clarity on nonresident tax and how to use Sprintax. Sprintax also offer a range of useful content on their blog to help you file your return.
