Program Purpose

The Student Organization Advisor Program at Widener University supports faculty and staff in serving as effective mentors and resources to student leaders. Advisors play a critical role in guiding students through personal development, organizational management, and leadership growth while maintaining appropriate boundaries that allow students to lead, learn from successes and failures, and develop essential skills for lifelong success.

Learning Outcomes

By serving as a student organization advisor at Widener University, faculty and staff will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of university policies, procedures, and advisor responsibilities to guide student organizations in maintaining compliance and organizational sustainability.
  2. Facilitate student development in core leadership and management competencies, including event planning, budgeting, risk management, team development, and member engagement.
  3. Model and mentor effective interpersonal and group communication skills, including teamwork, conflict resolution, and motivating others.
  4. Guide students in reflecting on personal values and leadership style to enhance their self-awareness and ethical decision-making.
  5. Foster organizational environments that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by helping students recognize the impact of identity, power, and privilege.
  6. Connect student leaders to campus resources, departments, and community partners to advance organizational goals and enhance student engagement.
