Benefits of Advising a Student Organization

Benefits of Advising

Recognized student organizations remain a cornerstone of campus life at Widener University, offering students valuable co-curricular opportunities to develop skills that are highly marketable in the professional world. Research shows that students who engage outside the classroom are more likely to graduate, secure employment within six months of graduation, and remain active alumni.

Serving as a faculty or staff advisor is a rewarding experience that provides unique insight into the Widener student population. Advisors have the opportunity to work closely with a group of students, often in ways that differ from their regular professional roles. Many find this experience especially fulfilling because it allows them to positively influence the growth, development, and success of their students.

Advising Time Commitment

The time commitment for faculty and staff advisors varies depending on the organization and the level of involvement, and ultimately is determined by the advisor’s discretion. The Office of Student Engagement strongly recommends having a clear conversation with your student leaders about expectations before committing to an organization. These expectations and standards should be communicated openly to ensure mutual understanding.

If you choose to attend all meetings and events, the time commitment may range from 1–4 hours per week. If you prefer to meet primarily with the organization’s officers and attend select events, the commitment could be as little as 1–4 hours per month. Advisors may allow students to drop by their office at any time or request that appointments be scheduled in advance.

Faculty and staff advisors are also expected to be available in times of emergency, serve as a professional in-person contact during social or large-scale events, and meet at least once a month with the organization’s leadership to review concerns, upcoming activities, and relevant University policies and procedures.
