Great Tips for Advising Student Organizations

Tips for Effective Advising

Set Early Expectations
Start with an open conversation about your expectations for the organization and their expectations for your role as advisor. Revisiting this discussion annually helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures everyone is on the same page. The earlier these expectations are set, the smoother the year will run!

Be Available
Accessibility is key to effective advising. Make sure student leaders can reach you via email or office phone, and consider attending regular meetings or events. Your presence demonstrates commitment and support, and strengthens your relationship with the group.

Challenge the Organization
Encourage students to step outside their comfort zones and try new things. Pushing the group to innovate or take on new initiatives enhances the experience for all members and promotes growth and leadership development.

Serve as an Information Resource
Officers will frequently consult you about programs and activities. Stay informed about their plans and offer guidance and suggestions, but avoid dominating decision-making. Your role is to support and advise, not to take control.

Advising Dos and Don’ts
As an advisor, you model leadership for your students—many of whom are experiencing leadership roles for the first time. The way you guide, support, and challenge them sets the tone for their development.

DO:

  • Allow others to fail and succeed
  • Know your limits
  • Be visible and consistent
  • Trust yourself with the group
  • Read and understand the group’s constitution
  • Teach the art of leadership

DON’T:

  • Control or manipulate the group
  • Take ownership of the group’s decisions
  • Limit communication
  • Fear trying new ideas
  • Act like a know-it-all or a Fixer
  • Say “I told you so”
