Intervention

When therapy at the SLP Clinic is recommended and sessions are available in the appropriate program, clients will be scheduled for intervention sessions. The schedule and nature of intervention sessions vary on a case-by-case basis; intervention may be provided individually and/or in groups. Sessions are generally scheduled for one semester at a time; client schedules are subject to change each semester.

All intervention services are provided by graduate clinicians, practicing under the direct supervision of an ASHA-certified, licensed clinical supervisor. The clinical supervisor assumes the professional responsibility for the management of each client’s treatment program, and will oversee that client’s plan of care until that client is discharged from services. Graduate clinicians will rotate cases each semester; clinical supervisors will generally remain with clients for the duration of their time at the SLP Clinic.

Observation of Sessions

Parents and/or caregivers are encouraged to observe assessment and treatment sessions. Parents and/or caregivers may occasionally be asked to participate in clinical sessions when appropriate. This will be communicated in advance of sessions to the greatest extent possible, to allow for appropriate scheduling and allocation of resources.

Tracking Progress

Client progress is monitored systematically and continually throughout each semester. At the beginning of each semester, a treatment plan will be established; emphasis is placed upon writing goals that facilitate clear, objective tracking of progress.

Performance is measured at the end of each session; data collected during the session is expressed through a written summary that should include subjective, objective, analysis, and plan information. In addition, cumulative progress is reviewed with clients at the end of each semester during a team conference, and expressed through a written progress summary.

Referrals to Other Professionals

When a client is receiving treatment, issues that fall outside of an SLP’s scope of practice often arise. When such instances occur, referrals to other appropriate professionals will be provided. If applicable, the client may be referred to the interprofessional pro bono Chester Community Clinic for interprofessional services.
