THE ROLE OF THE COLLEGE UNION

Widener University is a member of the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), the main professional association and home for thousands of student affairs professionals who work in college unions, student centers, and student activities departments. The mission of the organization is to advance campus community through education, advocacy, professional development, and connection.

The College Union serves as the “heart” of the campus and cultivates a connection to the institution.

OUR MISSION AND GOALS

The University Center, our college union, advances a sense of belonging by ensuring the delivery of an inclusive community atmosphere through a wide array of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs, services, facilities, and initiatives designed to connect our students, staff, faculty, alumni, and other guests.

By engaging with our department, participants will …

  • Foster Belonging and Connection. Create spaces, programs, and experiences that cultivate a sense of belonging, encourage authentic engagement, and strengthen students’ connection to the campus community.
  • Promote Collaborative Campus Engagement. Serve as a central hub for collaboration among students, faculty, and staff by facilitating cross-functional partnerships, inclusive programming, and leadership opportunities that build community and institutional pride.
  • Enhance Student Learning and Development. Advance student growth through intentional experiences that develop competencies in event planning, teamwork, communication, and organizational leadership aligned with ACUI’s Core Competencies.
  • Champion Inclusive and Vibrant Gathering Spaces. Provide welcoming, accessible, and dynamic environments—both formal and informal—that invite participation, dialogue, and cultural expression reflective of the diverse campus community.
  • Deliver Exceptional Event and Space Experiences. Ensure that all members of the campus community experience seamless, equitable, and satisfying interactions when reserving and utilizing union spaces for meetings, events, and traditions.
