Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL)?

Fraternity and Sorority Life at Widener is a community of values-based student organizations that promote leadership, scholarship, service, and lifelong friendships. It’s about finding your people while growing into the best version of yourself.

Why should I join a fraternity or sorority?

Membership offers countless benefits—from leadership development and academic support to community service, professional networking, and belonging. You’ll gain skills, connections, and experiences that stay with you long after graduation.

Who can join a fraternity or sorority?

Most organizations are open to all undergraduate students who meet basic eligibility requirements, including academic standing and conduct expectations. Some organizations may have additional criteria based on their membership intake process.

When can I join?

Each council follows a different timeline. Some recruit at the beginning of the semester, while others follow a more specific intake process later in the term. Visit the Membership Requirements page to learn more about each council’s process.

Do I need to know someone in a chapter to join?

Not at all! Many students join without knowing any members beforehand. Chapters host events to help you get to know them—just show up, be yourself, and ask questions.

How much does it cost to join?

Membership dues vary by organization, but they typically cover national fees, chapter operations, programming, and apparel. Many chapters offer payment plans, scholarships, or resources to assist with financial planning.

What’s the time commitment like?

It depends on the organization and your level of involvement. Most chapters have weekly meetings, service events, and social or educational programs. Like any meaningful experience, you get out of it what you put into it—but support and balance are always encouraged.

Is hazing allowed?

No. Widener University has a strict zero-tolerance policy on hazing. Fraternity and Sorority Life promotes safe, respectful, and uplifting membership experiences. If you ever feel uncomfortable, visit our Reporting Hazing page to seek support.

Can I join more than one fraternity or sorority?

In most cases, no—membership in a fraternity or sorority is exclusive. However, Widener students may hold membership in one social Greek-letter organization (affiliated with IFC, CPC, or NPHC) and one professional or special interest organization under the Council of Independent Organizations (CIO), if eligible.

For example, a student cannot join both a Panhellenic sorority and an NPHC sorority, but they may be a member of an NPHC fraternity and a CIO chapter if both groups allow it.

If you have questions about dual membership or eligibility, feel free to contact the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life for guidance.

What if I don’t see an organization that represents me?

While Widener University is currently not accepting new fraternity or sorority expansions, we are always open to conversations about the future. If you’re passionate about bringing a new organization to campus, we encourage you to connect with the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life. We’re happy to explore your ideas, provide guidance, and keep the conversation going for when expansion opportunities arise.
