General Membership Requirements

Joining a fraternity or sorority is a mutual selection process, where both the organization and the student take time to get to know one another. Each fraternity and sorority has its own way of introducing prospective members to its values, traditions, and community. Likewise, students are encouraged to explore their options, ask questions, and discover where they feel most at home.

The membership process may vary depending on the type of organization, which is guided by one of our four governing councils. Each council has its own timeline and approach to recruitment or intake, but all chapters share the same goal: building authentic, values-based connections.

While individual chapters may have their own expectations or requirements, all potential new members must meet a few baseline standards to be eligible to join:

  • Enrolled at Widener University as a Full-Time student
  • Must have earned a minimum of 12 credit hours
    • CIO organizations can join their first semester of their first year
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the current semester of which they are requesting to participate in the membership recruitment or intake process.
    • Some organizations may have a higher requirement
  • Must be in good standing with University Conduct
  • Must complete a Hazing Prevention and Alcohol Awareness online Canvas Course and receive at least a 90% on the corresponding quizzes after viewing the modules.
