Demo begins

As a memory of Cottee Hall as classroom and lab space, we made a shadowbox to hang in the newly renovated space.  It contains a picture of the Class of 2022 on their last day of class.  They are the last class to been fully educated in the building.  Much of that education happened in the “big lab” or Room 205.  The green “flowers” are made from the privacy curtains that hung in that room.  Members of the class signed the mat.

With everything packed the University Maintenance department moved everything and the builders started demolition in Cottee Hall.  The back parking lot now has 2 pods and 2 dumpsters that are nearly full (As of 5/20/22).

The demolition started with removing furniture and built-in cabinets.  Most doors and door frames have been removed.  Ceiling tiles and baseboard molding are gone.  In some places the carpet is cut in preparation to be removed.

Here is the front of the office suite –

The rear of the suite –

The “West Wing” conference room and hall.  Seems like the tape bikers has survived so far…

The treads on the steps have been removed but, for now, the 3 Cs survive.

Here are the offices of Dr Chancler and Dr Campbell.

Here is Room 118.  It appears it will be a staging location for the construction company.

** Note – These pictures only represents what is happening on the first floor.  I quickly realized my flip flops were not the appropriate footwear for a construction site.  I will need to bring closed toe shoes for next time.

In talking with the constructor foreman, this has been a week for the plumbers and the electricians.  They are disconnecting and removing everything that is on/in a wall that is not staying.  So all the electrical outlets, wires, and conduit are being pulled from interior.  Any electrical in the concrete walls can stay.  Plumber was disconnecting classroom sinks and had started in the bathrooms.

All the flooring is gone – carpet or tile – the exception being the bathrooms for the  moment.  Apparently it was a little loud in Bruce Hall for a few days.  Here is the main office suite.

Room 118 is the construction company’s staging area.

Room 205 is just as bare.

In room 204 we can see the concrete wall that was behind the cabinets.

The second floor alcoves are empty – front and rear respectively.

What’s next?  Apparently the interior walls come down next week (week of May 31).  We will try to get back so we can document that too.

June 9, 2022

As expected, most interior walls that are not concrete block are gone.  Some of the ventilation ducts have been removed too.  Most lights and drop ceiling supports are gone.

We can see see from the 118 right through the “West Wing” faculty offices.  In the top picture, those desks are in Dr Palombaro’s old office.  The windows would have been in Dr Erdman’s, Dr P’s then Dr Wellmon’s office.  You can just barely see the old walls in the floor.  The bottom picture looks from the those offices toward 118 – completely open now.

On the main office suite side, the top picture is where Jeanne’s workspace was.  The door to the hallway is just office picture to left.  The scaffolding (on right) is where Dr Black’s office and supply closet were.  The middle picture is the suite looking back to front – plumbing from faculty/staff kitchenette on left.  The bottom picture includes where Dr Paterson’s office, Dr Campbell’s office (green wall), and the table used to be.

On the second floor, room 205 did not change much – only closet walls were removed – so no pictures.  However, big changes on the “west” side with no walls between 204, the research lab (206), the wheelchair closet, the locker room space and the teaching closet.  Top picture is looking into 204 from the research lab.  The middle picture is looking from the rear of 204 into the research lab.  One of the few non-concrete block walls to stay is the wall that housed the AV for 204 – next to the door accessing the wheelchair closet.  Reason – there is an electrical panel on the closet side of that wall.  Bottom picture is old locker room space – with on set of lockers still in the space.

Not sure what is next or when more pictures will be available.  Suggest checking back in August.
