Zoom Recordings
Learn about how to set up and manage Zoom meeting recordings.
Before You Record
Should You Record?
Determine whether recording your Zoom meeting is appropriate. There is value in recording meetings so that those who were unable to attend can watch the recording. Prior to recording, consider the nature of what is being discussed and ensure participants are aware the meeting will be recorded.
Where to Record?
Zoom allows you to record either to the cloud or locally to your computer. When you start a recording in Zoom, you are prompted to decide where to save the recording. Review the pros and cons of each.
Cloud Recording:
- PROS – recording is shareable with link, transcription will be available, easily downloaded to a device
- CONS – recording only stored and accessible for 30 days
Local Recording:
- PROS – available for as long as you have the file, easily uploaded to OneDrive or Canvas Studio, chat is saved
- CONS – uses disk space on your computer, no transcription generated
Record Your Meeting
Within a Zoom meeting, the Record option is in the control bar along the bottom (you may need to click the More icon). Click Record and you will be prompted to either record on this computer or record to the cloud. Click your preference to begin recording.
Starting the recording will prompt all participants to acknowledge that the meeting will be recorded so they can provide consent by clicking ok.
Once your meeting is being recording, you will see the option to either pause or end the recording.

Manage Your Recordings
After your Zoom meeting, you may want to edit your Zoom recording before sharing it. Most computers have pre-installed video editing software such as ClipChamp for PC or iMovie for Mac. You can also do basic video editing in Canvas Studio.
Sharing your video may vary based on how you saved the recording. For cloud recordings, you can share via the link made available to you. You access recording links from your Zoom account. For locally saved recordings, you can either upload the video file to OneDrive and share the link or if you plan to share it in Canvas, upload it to Canvas Studio.
Considerations:
- If sharing a cloud recording link, include a reminder that the recording is only available for 30 days.
- Be mindful about how you share your recording with regards to who will have access – internal meetings and courses should not be made public
- Both OneDrive and Canvas Studio will generate captions for you. It is recommended that if you are storing your video in either platform, to have it generate captions to ensure your video is accessible.
